TEACHER OF COMPUTING, COMPUTER SCIENCE AND ICT ​​​​​​​

*For the right candidate there is possible TLR 2 (£3,391) to take on specific leadership role(s) within the Computing department – subject to experience.

We are seeking to appoint an excellent classroom practitioner who is an enthusiastic, innovative and engaging teacher of Computing, ICT and Computer Science and related subjects to join a dynamic and expanding team at the Academy. This role will work across Innovations Faculty and may be required to teach Business Studies as we continue to expand both areas.  

At the Academy we currently offer a wide programme of options within these subject areas this includes: Computer Science GCSE (OCR); ICT Technical Award L1/2 at KS4 (WJEC) and A level Computer Science (AQA); BTEC Digital Content Production Extended Certificate (Media); BTEC level 3 National Extended Certificate in Information Technology (new AAQ from September 2025) and also contributes to the transition T level vocational programme.

We would welcome applications from teachers early in their careers through to experienced staff. We have experienced staff to support ECT’s and staff at all levels. There are many opportunities at the Academy for staff personal and professional development with a wealth of experience and some outstanding practice in these faculties. There may be opportunities for the successful candidate with the right qualities and experience to apply for other roles within the faculty as these arise.

*With the recent appointment of the current Head of Computing to the Head of Faculty role, there is an opportunity to take on one or more aspects of leadership within Computing for example this may include one of the following areas for discussion on the interview day:

  • Leading Key Stage 4 Computer Science and ICT
  • Leading KS5 Computer Science, ICT and Media Studies
  • Or other relevant Vocational related role in discussion with the Principal and SLT link

To be eligible to apply for a leadership role within the department, the successful candidate must meet the person specification of a teacher but also have a minimum of 3 years recent and relevant teaching experience and evidence of contributing to departmental projects or whole school projects with evidence of impact. For further information on these, will be discussed on the interview day.

Please note there are also other TLR opportunities within the Academy to take on whole school projects and other roles, further information will be provided on the interview day about the exciting developments at this academy.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach a blend of Level 2 courses with at least one or more from: GCSE Computer Science and/or L1/2 vocational ICT and at least one of the subjects above at Level 3. All Computing staff should be able to teach the Computer Science at KS3. In addition, the successful candidate may well have to teach other Innovation specialisms. These could include specialisms in one or more subjects such as Design Technology, Media Studies Level 3, ASDAN (Post 16) or other GCSE or Vocational courses at KS4 or 5 in other faculty areas. All staff must be able to teach PSHE which falls within the role of a form tutor.

Our last Ofsted inspection in we were judged the Academy to be good in all categories and for overall effectiveness with some excellent feedback across all subjects and our Pastoral Care.

Joseph Leckie Academy is a vibrant, exciting and innovative mixed 11-18 Academy being graded as “Good” across all areas by Ofsted (October 2021).  Our ongoing desire to continually look to move forwards means that this is an exciting time to join our successful and welcoming team. The Academy has continually remained as one of the top non-selective secondary schools for progress in Walsall based on validated results and is a great place to work.

You will have/show:

  • Practical skills and expertise as outlined in the Job description
  • A passion and vision for working with students in their personal, social and emotional needs as well as their academic development
  • The ability to motivate and inspire students
  • Experience of delivering GCSE Computer Science and/or Level 1 / 2 ICT courses or equivalent
  • The ability to stimulate curiosity, interest and enjoyment in learning
  • Confidence in dealing with students across different age ranges particularly Key Stage 3 and 4
  • The ability to teach A Level / Level 3 courses offered in the department is highly desirable
  • The ability to teach a second subject when needed
  • Creative skills and a professional approach
  • The passion to enrich the lives of our students and contribute to the development of Cultural Capital to enhance the life opportunities for our students
  • Engagement in professional development opportunities
  • Outstanding inter-personal and communication skills with students, colleagues and parents
  • A clear understanding of the importance of Safeguarding.
