Personal Development Programme (PDP)

All students at Key Stage 3 will cover the following topic areas across Year 7 and 8. The content will be delivered through specially themed days which are taught by our own dedicated staff and external speakers where appropriate. Topics covered are:

Sex and Relationship Education.
Citizenship.
Careers.
Enterprise.

Physical Education (P.E)

During Year 7 students will be Introduced to a wide variety of physical activities aimed at developing their interest in physical education.

Each activity is designed to improve one or more of the following skills:

Participation as part of a team.
Cooperation and leadership skills.
Improve coordination
Improve overall fitness
Promote a healthy lifestyle.

Modern Foreign Languages

Throughout Key Stage 3, all students study one modern foreign language, currently French, for two hours per week. Students will be set according to their ability but they can move teaching groups as their skills develop.

Teachers are passionate about the French language and the culture of French speaking countries and relish the chance to share their passion. Lessons are therefore aimed at giving students a desire to develop their use of the language further as well as enabling them to discover a new culture in the most interactive, relevant and fun way.

Students in Year 7 will sing French songs, cook in French, experience the culture first hand by participating in a French breakfast for example.

Lessons are challenging yet enjoyable and rewarding!

Music

We follow a heavily practical curriculum in Year 7, centred on learning through doing and appraising. We introduce students to keyboards, guitars and percussion instruments and sing a great deal throughout the year. We also use Music Technology (Logic Pro X and explore effects processing, MIDI inputting and audio recording. We introduce forms of notation, and create a graphic score. Students are encouraged to work in groups and pairs, making decisions and judgements through self and peer appraisal in every lesson.

Art

Art is an essential part of all students' aesthetic and cultural education. At Joseph Leckie Academy our principle aims are:

For students to produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.
For students to become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques .
For students to evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.
Students will know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Drama

At Joseph Leckie we see drama as a discipline rather than just another subject. During year 7 lessons, we promote the ethos that the skills students develop in the Drama studio are transferable to other areas of the curriculum and life outside the school gate.

We like to have fun teaching about drama through the drama and hopefully end the year with a wide range of drama skills.

Students will have the opportunity to perform to the rest of their class which will help to boost their confidence and communication skills.

Religous Education

Students use religious and philosophical vocabulary to give informed accounts of religions and beliefs, explaining the reasons for diversity within and between them. They explain why the impact of religions and beliefs on individuals, communities and societies varies. They interpret sources and arguments, explaining the reasons that are used in different ways by different traditions to provide answers to ultimate questions and ethical issues.

Students use reasoning and examples to express insights into the relationship between beliefs, teachings and world issues. They express insights into their own and others' views on questions of identity and belonging, meaning, purpose and truth. They consider the challenges of belonging to a religion in the contemporary world, focusing on values and commitments.

Geography

Throughout Year 7 students will be given the opportunity to develop their research skills and develop their understanding of various aspects of geography. They will gain an understanding of how people and the environment interact.

Lessons will aim to inspire their imagination and develop a desire to learn more about the world we live in a vibrant environment.

History

Throughout Year 7 students will be given the opportunity to develop their understanding of history. They will work on developing their research skills as well as their understanding of historical sources and building on previous ideas about History. Lessons will aim to inspire their imagination and develop a desire to learn more about the past in a vibrant environment. Students will be assessed on their historical knowledge and understanding and historical skills including source analysis and interpretations of the past with the aim of making them a more critical historian.

ICT

Throughout Year 7 students will experience a range of scenarios through which they develop problem solving and team working skills. Lessons will aim to inspire their imagination and develop information technology skills which they can transfer to other areas of the curriculum and to their everyday life. Lessons will be taught in dedicated computer suites by ICT specialists throughout Year 7.

Design & Technology

Throughout Year 7 students will be given the opportunity to develop skills in a range of Design and Technology areas. The projects are designed to inspire the students and to encourage them to understand and explore materials in food, resistant materials, textiles, graphics, electronics and CAD/ CAM.

Students will be taught on a rotation of the above subjects to ensure they can develop skills across all areas.

Science

Throughout Year 7 students will be given the opportunity to develop their understanding and knowledge of Science and its application in the world around us.

Students will develop a range of skills such as: enquiry, group work and communication.

They will gain experience of using a range scientific equipment and developing skills in data handling and problem solving through a range of scientific scenarios. This will encourage students to think methodically and creatively.

Mathematics

Students entering the Academy in Year 7 follow a newly developed mathematics scheme of Work. Students study topics designed to build on their Key Stage 2 knowledge and understanding As the Academy has a condensed two year KS3, students are provided with the opportunity to make at least two levels of progress throughout the two years.

English

All students will be given the opportunity to develop a range of skills within English. They will build on previous knowledge from KS2 and cover all aspects of the National Curriculum in interesting and innovative lessons. Students will be encouraged to access a range of fiction and non fiction texts, in class and independently, throughout the two year key stage: this will support their learning and encourage reading which in turn will ensure progress in other curriculum area. They will develop the skills to write in a range of different styles and for a variety of purposes, all part of a carefully planned programme leading towards a final assessment at the end of KS4.
