Geography

Throughout Year 7 students will be given the opportunity to develop their research skills and develop their understanding of various aspects of geography. They will gain an understanding of how people and the environment interact.

Lessons will aim to inspire their imagination and develop a desire to learn more about the world we live in a vibrant environment.

Geography in Year 7

Course Content

Students will have the opportunity to study the following:

  •  Geographical Skill - Classical geographical skills are taught including OS map reading, and using a compass.
  • People everywhere - Students look at the impacts of 7 billion people and how to manage rapid population growth.
  • Raging Rivers and Cracking coasts - Lessons will enable students to understand how unique landforms around the world are created from the power of rivers and waves.
  • Wild Weather - Students develop enquiry skills to investigate the weather of the British Isles.
  • Urbanisation - Factors affecting urban growth and effects of growth at a variety of scales will be studied. Students will be challenge to design their own sustainable community.

Gifted and Talented Provision

  • Higher order thinking activities are designed to stretch those identified as gifted and talented.
  • Students have access to a textbook specifically designed to challenge gifted and talented students.

Extra Curricular Opportunities

  • Eco-club for those interested in the environment.
  • Fieldwork which includes discovering microclimates and tourism in the summer term.

Assessment

  • Students are assessed using written assessments and projects at the end of each unit of work throughout the year. 
  • Assessments will be used to track student progress, inform decisions about sets and create individual targets which will raise their aspirations.

Equipment Required

  • General class equipment—pen, pencil, ruler and student organiser.

Geography in Year 8

Students will have the opportunity to study the following:

  • Advanced Mapping— Students will use longitude and latitude to explore the physical and human features in Africa and Asia.
  •  World Issues— Students will explore current world issues affecting modern society such as food and water supply, climate change, trade and aid.
  •  Restless Earth—Students will investigate the causes of volcanoes and earthquakes. They will examine the social, economic, environmental and political impacts of these events.
  • India—Students will learn about the physical, human and economic features of this country and how they vary across regions.
  • Groovy Glaciers—Lessons will enable students to understand how unique landforms around the world are created
  • Kenya—Students will learn about the physical, human and economic features of this country and how they vary
