Travelling to the Academy

It is very important for your son/daughter to get to and from the Academy safely.

In recent years a number of improvements have been made in and around the Academy site to help this.

Walking and cycling paths have been laid, new traffic lights installed at Walstead Road/West Bromwich Road and at Bell Bridge, a pelican crossing by Lord Street, traffic calming road humps, the addition of street lights and a secure cycle storage unit on site.

There are also things that you can do to help with safety:

  • Make sure your son/daughter knows at least two contact telephone numbers in case of an emergency.
  • Encourage them to travel with their friends and remind them about “Stranger Danger.”
  • Know how long it should take them to journey to and from the Academy.
  • If they are being driven to the Academy, please drop your child off at a safe point and be respectful of local residents’ drives.
  • Please do not park outside or block entry to the Academy.

The Pastoral Care System

The aim of the pastoral care system is to oversee and support the care of learning. This contributes towards the development of the personal, social and academic development of all students in the Academy.

The Academy prides itself on offering experienced and well-organised pastoral leaders and tutors to support each student’s individual needs. The system operates through an individual year system.

The house system will continue to operate for sporting as well as other events and activities.

The Year System and Houses

Students are looked after and supported throughout their time at Joseph Leckie Academy by their Form Tutor and Head of Year (HOY).

Heads of Year manage the overall behaviour, pastoral care and oversee the safety of youngsters in each year group. There are six Heads of Year from Year 7 through to Sixth Form.

Each year group has a dedicated team of around ten Form Tutors who play a vital role in greeting students each day, checking uniform and equipment, whilst ensuring that students are happy, safe and ready to begin their studies every day. Any issues or concerns raised by the Form Tutor are passed to the Head of Year or safeguarding officer swiftly.

Heads of Year are additionally responsible for attendance, behaviour and discipline within the year group as well as being there to provide help, advice and support to students and their families in their care.

Each year group and HOY is linked to a designated member of the Academy Leadership Team (LT link). The LT link, supports the Head of Year and tutor teams directly, so as to offer a direct route to the Principal, governors or safeguarding lead.

In addition to the year system each student in years 7 to 10 are allocated a house. The house system provides support networks and opportunities through a range of house activities such as inter-form and inter-house competitions. Each house as a designated House Coordinator (HC), they are responsible for ensuring participation in competitions and engagement in the school community. The HC will also intervene with students who are not accessing enrichment provision in order to help break down barriers and build confidence.

Rewarding Good Work and Behaviour

The Academy has a reward system in place which enables students to gain 'Vivo's' for their effort, attainment, attendance and punctuality etc.

Each student has on online Vivo account which they can spend their well deserved Vivo's on any item of their choice depending on the amount of Vivo's they have.
